My name is Gavin Prior and this is a pic of my barrel tuned by Mick Abbey. I found out about Mick Abbey through the RD Discussion forum http://www.yamaha-rd.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi

Mick has tuned my 1988 TZR 125 and I’m extremely impressed with the results. The bike was previously running a barrel tuned by another well known tuner in a  stage three tune, with the genuine powervalve kit. I had a spare barrel that was standard so I gave that & the head to Mick for him to tune. The first thing I have to say is that the quality of the finish is excellent. Mick has clearly taken time & care over his work. It’s not just the port openings that have been worked (as with some other tuners), Mick has had his files in everywhere; everything has been cleaned up & improved. There’s also some heavy re-working of the head & the legs at the bottom of the barrel. The other important thing about Mick is he takes time to understand exactly what you want from the tune, there’s none of this stage1,2,3 stuff. If you want to go racing, you’ll get a race tune, if you want a road tune, then that’s what you’ll get. And you will get setting up advice as well!.

I had asked Mick for a tune for track day fun that I could use on the road. I wanted more speed, more top end with the ability to rev out, but I still wanted it to be reasonably tractable. Mick listened to my needs and its fair to say I got what I wanted. However, I didn’t expect to get so much eagerness everywhere and such a smooth spread of power! it just wants to go and go. The top end is a big improvement but it still runs out of steam passed the redline, but I think this is due to the standard pipe holding it back. I have ridden it up & down the local bypass. With a slack knackered chain, half the fairing missing, bald tyres & me wearing a puffy bomber jacket it did an indicated 97mph sitting upright (!) (Could only get 90 sitting up on the other tuned one  and about 85 on the standard engine) and 100 mph prone, so it’s not lacking in power, stuff like gearing, aerodymics, pipe, ignition are stopping it going any faster. The engine now has the ability to pull through to the redline in top in all conditions, whereas before it would only get up to the redline in top gear in the right conditions.

Mick is building me a pipe to match the tune, actually he's building two, one hydro formed & one from cones, just for comparison. Mick tells me that either pipe will allow it to rev to 12,500 rpm and that it should pull about 110 mph! Micks tuning works. The finish is excellent, and it’s cheap. He will listen to what you want & you'll get it. And he won’t ask for any money till it’s done. Top bloke. Top tune. Going to get my YPVS barrels done by him too. When I get round to that project.I can be contacted on gavin_prior@hotmail.com if you need more information.
